How many Tugboats you have?

Did you ever felt that the world is getting more and more competitive with each passing day? You come up with a new business today and tomorrow there will be 10 more competing you.  The moment you felt I have learnt enough; there is a new technology, new algorithm, new research published and you have to buckle up again. So how does one survive in such situation? How does one be on the top of the competition?

Have you ever seen how big vessels, big cargo and cruise ships do to get anchored in busy, narrow ports? Get dragged to the port in case of technical failures... They take the help of very small compared to their own size but very very powerful boats called “Tugboats”.

Check this video to  get a feel of what I mean

The competitive world around us is similar to busy and narrow port and the career or company is like the big ship. The port is the milestone one wants to achieve.  So to get the big ship of my career to the position I wana achieve surviving the competition, I need to use Tugboats.

I have  an of example  for this...

The company who I think is the master of this concept is GOOGLE.
Keep reading and you will not have to scratch your head.
Go to google.com and check out their portfolio of products.
Many of the famous products like YouTube, Google Maps, Picasa which are a more or less used by almost everybody are yet to make money. But these and many more products keep you attached to the Google brand.
In layman’s terms, Google’s basic business model is to get advertisers and place their ads search results, on partner sites suitably. They charge the advertiser for ads and pay a part of it to the partner sites for placing the ads on their site.
They would want more and more sites to place ads and the partner sites will definitely want a considerable share of the revenue. So strategically they purchased Blogger.com, FeedBurner.com, launched platforms like Google sites. Google Users like you and me use these platforms to put our creative brains online. If the site/blog/feed is good enough, Google is ready to share a part of the revenue with you through its AdSense program. This is a win-win situation for both Google and Users. Google gets more sites to place ads and Users get to earn for their creative work. For Google, this helps to boost its core business and beat the competition to be what it is; a synonym to web search world’s number 1 search engine.

The point is at times, to give that kick, that mileage to one's career, a company. We need to do something like acquire a new skill; increase your social network; if you are a introvert, start talking or if you talk much, be more sensible when you talk; launch a new product which supports the existing product, launch a program such that users are tempted to use your products more and many more.

I have got one Tugboat for myself..Its called SidsAvenue.

  1. Heres one more example of adding tugboats. ICICI Pru has come up with a initiative for all its policy holders where in the customers are rewarded for being healthy. I feel its an awesome idea. Even if 1% of the customers take it seriously and manage to be healthy ICICI gains as there are no claims and customer is also happy thinking ICICI cares for it customers. Its a win-win deal for both
